Daniel's Law, however, changes the way people are punished for distracted driving. For example: Distracted driving is now punished similarly to drunk driving. Penalties for distracted drivers convicted of vehicular homicide have increased – these drivers could face an additional 5 years in prison.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into force Daniel's Law on November 20, 2020. The law is named for U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas' son Daniel Anderl, who was brutally shot and killed in the family's home in 2020 by a disgruntled former litigant who also severely wounded Judge Salas' husband.

Daniel's Law aims to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of personal information of "covered persons" (i.e., active or retired law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors and child protective investigators—along with immediate family members residing in the same household).
